“Raised by Wolves” by U2 is a rise-up and drive song by U2 that conjures up early memories of the U2 band genesis. Most of us discover this song innocent of its lyrical portrait of a very sad day in Dublin Ireland, a history that almost took Bono’s life but for the fates looking out for him and us. The sparing of Bono was due to a bus strike, but unfortunately, 34 others did not escape with such a lucky twist of fate. The HBO concert video from Paris, Raised by Wolves, is a tragic opera theatrical that works. A live U2 performance can be visually bloated and sometimes histrionics-heavy. Yet, these performances in 2015 Paris remind us of what we love most about these Northern Dublin lads’ strong passion and elegant grace.
On the evening of May 17th, 1974, Dublin city center was rocked by three explosions. The first, at 5.28 pm, was in Parnell Street and killed eleven people. The second explosion, which took place almost immediately after the first, was in Talbot Street. This blast killed fourteen people. The third explosion was responsible for the death of two more In South Leinster Street, which occurred just after 5.30 pm,
Just before 7.00 pm that evening, a further explosion occurred in Monaghan Town, where seven people died.
In addition to the lives lost, estimated explosions injured up to 300 people, some disabled for life. No advance warning and no organization claimed responsibility for them at the time. In 1993 the Ulster Volunteer Force claimed it had carried out the attacks. Controversy still surrounds the possible involvement of other groups in the bombings and how the original inquiry into the event was conducted.

“The only reason I wasn’t standing in the record store at 5.30 pm on May 17, 1974, is that a bus strike meant that we’d had to cycle to school,” he said.
“We were already home when the streets around Dolphin Discs were blown to bits by a car bomb in Talbot Street, another in Parnell Street, and another in South Leinster Street, all within minutes, a coordinated attack by an Ulster loyalist extremist group that wanted the south to know what terrorism felt like.”
