Learn more about decentralized finance. Understand the infrastructure of decentralized finance, assess opportunities in this space, and screen out ideas that are likely to fail.

DeFi and the Future of Finance is a four-course learning experience. DeFi, or Decentralized Finance, is a new technology whereby users interact as peers with algorithms or smart contracts rather than through traditional intermediaries such as banks, brokerages, or insurance companies.  Technology has the potential to transform finance as we know it. It solves key problems in traditional finance, such as lack of inclusion, inefficiency, opacity, centralized control, and lack of interoperability.

  • The first course, DeFi Infrastructure, focuses on the historical evolution of decentralized finance and the problems that DeFi solves.
  • The second course, DeFi Primitives, deals with mechanics, supply and ownership, and loans and swaps.
  • The third course, DeFi Deep Dive, explores the leading protocols, including MakerDAO, Compound, Aave, Uniswap, and dYdX.
  • The fourth course, DeFi Risks and Opportunities, analyze the key risks, including smart contract risk, governance risk, scaling as well as regulatory issues. The final part of the course sketches a vision of finance in the future, including the winners and the losers.

Amazing course specialization! Take all four of these courses. Up to date as of early 2022, unlike the Consesnys course I took before this one.

Excellent course! Highly recommended. I took this course as part of the four-course specialization. Professor Harvey does an excellent job explaining many nuances to DeFi.

He uses a combination of PowerPoint, visuals, analogies, and case studies to make the content understandable. The professor teaches with clarity and passion yet treats the subject fairly offering alternative points of view about the opportunities and risks of DeFi as compared to the current financial system.

I have introduced to the cryptocurrency and DeFi space a little over six months ago. Since then, I have “fallen down the rabbit hole,” so to speak, and cannot learn enough about it. These courses provide a strong foundation to explore further personal investing and or a career in the space.

Unlike the other courses I took on Coursera related to blockchain and cryptocurrencies (which were also pretty good), these courses felt much more up-to-date than the others—being up to date in this space is essential because one year is like ten years of another field in terms of innovation and how fast the landscape changes.

Specific to this course, it was really helpful to understand a broad overview of the opportunities and risks involved in the DeFi space both as an individual and as a society. I appreciated the passionate call the action at the end of the course. Though I am watching the course through a screen, it felt authentic and inspiring. I am sure many people will be positively impacted because this course is made available online.

Decentralized Finance (DeFi) Deep Dive
$49.00
DeFi and the Future of Finance is a set of four courses that focus on decentralized finance. The third course is called DeFi Deep Dive. You must do the first two courses I. DeFi Infrastructure and II. DeFi Primitives before doing this course. It is the longest of the four courses and focuses on some of the leading protocols in the DeFi space. We will look at Credit and Lending (and feature MakerDAO, Compound, and Aave), Decentralized Exchange with an analysis of how protocols like Uniswap and Balancer works, Derivatives (featuring Yield Protocol, dYdX and Synthetix), and Tokenization with an analysis of Set Protocol as well as wrapped bitcoin. We include detailed examples of how the mechanics work for many of these leading protocols. For example, we show how to use a dYdX flash swap to execute an arbitrage transaction (take advantage of different prices on different exchanges for the same asset).
