Angel Olsen Forever Means

Discovering new music often feels like a combination of chance and deliberate pursuit. While YouTube algorithms may seem like a random stroke of luck, they sometimes unveil true musical gems. Angel Olsen is one of those artists who reached us through Guitartown@guitartwang on Twitter, though her journey to the spotlight is no accident. As Guitartown notes, “Stephen Judge of SchoolKids Records in Raleigh first brought her to my attention around the time of Burn Your Fire for No Witness, but it was hearing ‘Shut Up Kiss Me’ on KEXP that sealed the deal for me. From that moment on, I was hooked.”

Regardless of how Angel Olsen’s music found its way into our lives, she has cemented her place and isn’t going anywhere. Here at CoolMediallc.com, our readers have come to expect a certain quality from the artists we cover, and Olsen delivers. If you’re tuning in for the first time, prepare to have your emotions stirred, as her music captures raw human experience like few others.

One of the hidden delights in Olsen’s early live performances, such as those at Austin City Limits, is the powerhouse backup vocals from H.C. McEntire. Known for her work both as a solo artist and with her band, Mount Moriah, McEntire joined Angel Olsen’s band in the summer of 2016. For the next eighteen months, she toured across North America, Europe, and Australia, providing stirring support for Olsen’s breakthrough 2016 LP My Woman. This period was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for McEntire, showcasing her talents while adding depth to Olsen’s already captivating performances.

It’s no coincidence that artists like Olsen and McEntire cross our radar—they represent a confluence of exceptional talent and timing. So sit back and dive into their music, knowing that you’re in for something special.

Angel Olsen – Big Time (Official Video)

Lyrics:
Goodmorning kisses giving you all mine
Pull back the curtains show me the sunshine
Needing this coffee needing some nature
Need it right now it can’t wait until later
We’re always busy baby not this time
Lay in the tall grass talkin’ with your eyes
Talkin’ with your eyes before we knew we were
Thinkin’ the same things I’m a believer
And I’m losin’ I’m losin’ I’ve left it behind
Guess I had to be losin’ to get here on time
And I’m living I’m loving I’ve loved long before
I’m loving you big time I’m loving you more
Take to the lake playing lady in red
Hanging onto every word that you said
Staying up all night out by the fire
Singing your song now you know I’m a crier
And I’m losin’ I’m losin’ I’ve left it behind
Guess I had to be losin’ to get here on time
And I’m living I’m loving I’ve loved long before
I’m loving you big time I’m loving you more
And I’m losin’ I’m losin’ I’ve left it behind
Guess I had to be losin’ to get here on time
And I’m living I’m loving I’ve loved long before
I’m loving you big time I’m loving you more

The reverb that buoys Angel Olsen’s already hugely resonant voice throughout Big Time forms a golden tunnel through which these songs of high romance, grief and resilience flow as they reach back to both the Countrypolitan 1960s and the psychedelic confessions of Los Angeles experimenters like Judee Sill. The stylistic flourishes could distract, but Olsen’s disarmingly forthright lyrics and hug-shaped singing turn the album’s time travel into a journey aimed straight at heart.

Big Time

Through the Fires (Lyric Video)

Nine months ago

Thank you, Angel, for your music; the reason for your music is Supreme therapy for us who are depressed and sad.

“It’s a song I wrote to remind myself that this life is temporary, the past is not something to dwell on, that it’s important to keep moving, keep searching for the people that are also searching, and to notice the moments that are lighter and bigger than whatever trouble I’ve encountered.”

Angel Olsen is finding freedom in being simple and direct, embracing songwriting in its most honest manifestation. She once desired to be everything — an unclassifiable, cross-genre musical phenomenon; now, she’s learning to let her heart take the lead.

“I haven’t figured it out — because I haven’t — but I do feel like it’s probably reflective of me surrendering to the fact that I don’t have control anymore,” she tells me over Zoom.

Though some might find it disorienting to let go of that control, Olsen says she has never felt more grounded than she has while making Big Time, her sixth studio album.

“I’m proud of the records I’ve made in the past,” she says, “But I will say, I think that this one stands alone because it feels like I’m not running away from being genre-sized for the first time.”

Angel Olsen Big TIme Album

Editorial Reviews

2022 release. Big Time is an album about the expansive power of new love, but this brightness and optimism is tempered by a profound and layered sense of loss. During Olsen’s process of coming to terms with her queerness and confronting the traumas that had been keeping her from fully accepting herself, she felt it was time to come out to her parents, a hurdle she’d been avoiding for some time. After that tearful but relieving conversation, she celebrated with her partner, their friends, oysters, and wine. Three days later, her father died; his funeral became the occasion for Olsen to introduce her partner to her family. Though she was fearful their presence as a newly out queer couple would be “an additional symbol of loss,” those days went peacefully, yet only two weeks later Olsen got the call that her mother was in the ER. Hospice came soon after, and a second funeral came quickly on the heels of the first. Another trip back to St. Louis, another grief to face, another deepening and intensification of this still-new love. Three weeks after her mother’s funeral she was in the studio, recording this incredibly wise and tender album.

Lyrics: I lost sight, then I made up my mind To learn to release the dreams that had died In spite of the sound of what I had heard To recognize truth without any word I felt the change, and it came back around Then I moved into the feeling I found And the feeling I found Showed me how I could lose to love without boundary and put it to use To remember the ghost Who exists in the past But be freed from the longing For one moment to last And walk through the fires Of all earthly desires And let go of the pain that obstructs you from higher higher higher Higher higher higher higher higher lighter lighter lighter – Credits: A Film by Kimberly Stuckwisch and Angel Olsen An Invisible Inc Production In Association with Jagjaguwar Directed By Kimberly Stuckwisch Starring Angel Olsen and Beau Thibodeaux Produced by Other Operation Angel Olsen – Through The Fires (Official Video)

“Holy arrangement, batman. I have found the next aural fascination. This is how my mind sounds in the process of creation.” My first impulsive sentence after hearing the opening 4 minutes of The Valley of Vision.

Manchester Orchestra originated in the Atlanta suburbs. They are named after the English city of Manchester, a city frequently viewed as being bohemian and also rich in musical history (The Smiths, The Fall, The Buzzcocks, The Stone Roses, Joy Division, Oasis, New Order, Happy Mondays, Magazine, Rick Astley)

John Andrew Hull (born November 7, 1986) is an American singer, musician, and songwriter. He serves as the lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist, and primary songwriter of the indie rock band Manchester Orchestra. He also has a side project, Right Away, Great Captain!, and is co-founder of a side project with his friend and folk musician Kevin Devine named Bad Books. Hull is also co-president of Manchester Orchestra’s label, Favorite Gentlemen.
