Journey behind the scenes of modern and contemporary art, gaining a deeper understanding of artists’ processes, their responses to technological advancements, and the societal issues they confront. Bio

Sarah Meister became a Curator at The Museum of Modern Art in 2009, having joined the Department of Photography in 1997. Her recent exhibitions include From Bauhaus to Buenos Aires: Grete Stern and Horacio Coppola (2015; co-curator), Modern Photographs from the Thomas Walther Collection, 1909–1949 (2014-15; co-curator), Nicholas Nixon: Forty Years of The Brown Sisters (2014); Walker Evans American Photographs, 75th anniversary (2013-14), Bill Brandt: Shadow and Light (2013) and Eugène Atget: “Documents pour artistes” (2012). Meister contributes to and edits a variety of Museum and external publications, including, most recently, Photography at MoMA: 1960 to Now (2015) and two collaborations with Maira Kalman and Daniel Handler, Hurry Up and Wait (2015). Girls Standing on Lawns (2014). Many of her favorite MoMA photographs are featured in this course, including (but not limited to!) work by Diane Arbus, Iñaki Bonillas, Lee Friedlander, Katy Grannan, Zoe Leonard, Susan Meiselas, Vik Muniz, Nicholas Nixon, Martha Rosler, Cindy Sherman, Hank Willis Thomas, Carleton Watkins, and snapshots given by Peter J. Cohen. She holds an AB in Art History from Princeton University, with honors, and received the Lee Tenenbaum Award for outstanding research and scholarship. Bio

Sophie Cavoulacos is Assistant Curator in the Department of Film at The Museum of Modern Art, where she organizes moving image programming and exhibitions. In 2017, she organized the gallery exhibition Club 57: Film, Performance, and Art in the East Village, 1978–1983 and the film series New York Film and Video: No Wave–Transgressive with Curator Ron Magliozzi. She is on the selection committee for New Directors/New Films and is the lead curator for Modern Mondays, the avant-garde series to which she has contributed evenings with Alexander Kluge, Bernadette Mayer and Morgan Ritter, Metahaven, Nazli Dincel, and Semiotext(e), among others. Lisa Mazzola

Lisa Mazzola

Director, Young Learners The Museum of Modern Art

Bio

Lisa Mazzola has been working in the field of Museum Educator for over 20 years. In her current role as the Director of Young Learner Programs she develops programs, resources ( analog and digital) for K- 12 teachers and students that relate to MoMA’s collections and museum-based teaching practice. Current digital projects include the award-winning MoMA Learning site. In addition to her role in School and Teacher Programs, she has taught in an adjunct capacity for NYU and Columbia Teacher’s College in their Arts Administration and Arts Education masters programs. Prior to her work at MoMA, Lisa coordinated gallery education and special projects at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institution in New York City and the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.. Lisa received a B.A. from the State University of New York, College at Oswego, where she majored in Art History and minored in Museum Studies and an M.A. in Liberal Studies/Urban Education from the CUNY Graduate Center in New York City.
